After World War II, America spent huge sums of our taxpayers' money to totally rebuild a Europe that had, for the second time in thirty years, destroyed itself with war.
In the years since, these now totally modernized and prosperous nations still depended on America's taxpayers to protect and defend them, refusing to meet even the agreed upon minimum for their self-defense. Instead, these nations redirected their military budgets into buying more and more luxuries for their citizens.
During this time the Europeans were so cynical and self-serving that, even as they screeched their warnings about the "evils" of Vladimir Putin -- and even in the wake of his having invaded other European nations -- they continued to fund his war machine because his oil and gas was cheaper.
The thinking was simple: the cheaper the gas, the more luxuries they could buy for themselves and their countrymen while they felt safe in the knowledge that America would save them and foot the bill to boot.
Now, some three-quarters of a century after the end of World War II -- and three-plus decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union -- the same nations that wouldn't even meet their most minimal NATO defense obligations are demanding that America far exceed our NATO mandate and fund their preferred side in just one more war of Europeans versus Europeans.
Ukraine is not a NATO country and thus we have no obligation to fund their defense. Neither is Ukraine a very good country. In fact, it is rather corrupt with a strong Neo-Nazi contingent. We have no history with them nor do we share common values.
Neither has Ukraine shown much of a sense of obligation or allegiance to us. Except for self-serving measures like the condemnation of Russia, their record of supporting America at the UN is so-so at best, while they are virtually guaranteed to side with our enemies whenever an issue regarding our ally in Israel comes up.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy to see Russia being exposed as a paper tiger and to see whatever military might they possess being depleted on the battlefield. That's good for America and good for the world.
I'm just saying that, after seventy-five years of depending on America to pay for their defense, it's time for our European brethren to stop being our dependents and start being our allies. That goes for you guys in Canada, too!

Enjoyed reading you thoughts on the subject.
If we can not benefit from the minerals (which i believe they are in the areas Russia has taken control of, I could be wrong, let me know) then we shouldn't bother helping Ukraine to get those areas back.
